Leadership

Leadership is a function of human life. There are as many different styles as there are leaders. There are less variables that can be identified through research, study and application than there are that cannot, and it is these concealed variables that can impact the effectiveness of Leadership.

Behind every function of Leadership is a human being with their own unique experiences, histories and conditioning. These deeply concealed dimensions colour and inform the way in which leaders conduct themselves and their ability to inspire and manage others.

Congruence, transparency and integrity are the foundations on which the functionality of Leadership rests and can only be realised from within; without which Leadership rests on the fragile structures of charisma, power and knowledge.

The most effective leaders are not those who have just gained experience in the context in which they work, or the level of skill they have in Leadership development. Most importantly, they are those who are at rest and comfortable in themselves. They have self assurance, not just self confidence. Self assurance embodies and understands the subordinate role of a leader as ‘service’. This requires a trusting and mutually respectful relationship with others, which then allows the confidence and humility to maximise all the human resources that are to hand.

Being able to motivate and inspire others in the collective vision and goal is an individual and organisational competence that reflects maturity, intelligence and balance, and is not an automatic outcome of conceptual Leadership development.

Well-being makes a critical contribution to sustainable effective Leadership. Acquisition of specific workplace or organisational skills is very important but the quality of being who delivers is what makes the difference. Whilst initially it is useful to acquire conceptual insight and awareness about oneself, it is not enough. Leaders are required to turn inwards and to face their own ‘dis-ease’ if they are to mature cognitively, emotionally and spiritually and thus realise their fullest potential in their work.  I offer people who are in a Leadership role the space in which they can examine the personal and professional obstructions that stand in the way of an efficient, economic and meaningful relationship between work place goals and the people they engage with.
